| Human resources to be trained | In addition to cancer treatment and palliative medicine, pharmacists are now expected to be involved in the use of anticancer drugs and palliative medicine at home. Especially in Hokuriku and Nagano prefectures, where the percentage of three generations living together is high, a system for introducing home medical care can be said to be in place. Along with the development of the system, a system in which hospital pharmacists and pharmacists in charge of home medical care work together to provide treatment is being built. On the other hand, since pharmacists have only been involved in home medical care for a short time, it is difficult for them to acquire theories and techniques, and it is undeniable that medical care is provided based on empirical rules. Therefore, a graduate school of pharmacy will lead the region in developing human resources who can take the lead in cancer treatment, from cutting-edge medicine to home care in the region, by providing lectures and exercises on the role of pharmacists in highly demanded team medicine and cancer treatment in home care, and on recent antibody drugs and genome medicine. Since the aging of the population and the declining birthrate are the most advanced in Japan, the program aims to produce pharmacists who can holistically support cancer patients through team medicine by fostering human resources who can lead cancer treatment in the region as a whole from a pharmacological perspective. | ||||||
| Cooperation with professional qualifications related to cancer | Accredited as a training facility for professional pharmacists (Japanese Society of Clinical Pharmacology). Several faculty members of the Faculty of Pharmacy are pharmacist advisors of the Japanese Society of Therapeutic Pharmacy and the Japanese Society of Clinical Pharmacology. Several oncology pharmacists have been produced from the participants in the third stage of the program. | ||||||
| Characteristics of educational content | The course will include not only what hospital and pharmacy pharmacists are already doing today, but also advanced content that can only be conducted at universities. Lectures will be conducted via e-learning to make it easier for participants to attend. In addition to training pharmacists to participate in cancer treatment at home, we also plan to conduct our own practical training in the medical field so that they can play a key role in collaboration with other professions in the community. In particular, considering that most cancer patients are elderly, the practical training will be more realistic in Toyama Prefecture, where the population is aging 15 years faster than the Japanese average. | ||||||
| Guidance system | The course will be supervised by Professor Atsumi Nitta, Department of Pharmacotherapeutics, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Natural Medicine, Academic Research Division. In addition, Professor Masato Taguchi of Practical Pharmacy will participate in the planning of practical training related to the pharmacist profession in community medicine. In addition, Professor Hiroaki Sakurai of the Department of Cancer Cell Biology will be in charge of lectures and exercises related to genomic medicine for cancer treatment. | ||||||
| Career path of graduates | The course provides certification as a pharmacist specializing in and teaching oncology certified by the Japanese Society of Therapeutic Pharmacy and Therapeutics and a pharmacist certified in palliative pharmacotherapy certified by the Japanese Society of Palliative Medicine and Pharmacotherapy. Depending on the healthcare provider institution to which the participant belongs, those working in acute care hospitals are expected to contribute to team medicine including cancer chemotherapy, engage in advanced chemotherapy including genomic medicine, and participate in clinical research. Those who belong to chronic care hospitals and pharmacies are expected to lead the care for cancer patients in the community, including palliative and end-of-life care. They will become practicing pharmacists and contribute to the training of the next generation of human resources. | ||||||

| Acceptance Goals | Toyama Prefecture has four medical regions and eight cancer base hospitals. We set the target number of students to be accepted into these hospitals because they will play a key role as oncology pharmacists, and pharmacy pharmacists also need to be able to take a leadership role in oncology treatment. | ||||||
