Human resources to be trained | The past decade has seen major developments in cancer treatment on multiple fronts. Among them, immune checkpoint inhibitors have significantly changed the direction of cancer treatment. Therefore, it is of course important for pharmacists in team medicine and in the community to work on appropriate cancer therapies, but it is also important to conduct basic research that leads to cancer therapeutics. Therefore, the objective of this program/course is to train pharmacists and drug discovery researchers who can lead society in cancer treatment, and to deepen mutual understanding through lectures, exercises, and practical training together. The basic content of pharmacist training is included in the six-year pharmacy school education. Therefore, we aim to produce advanced pharmacists who go beyond the current pharmacists. In addition to personalized medicine for cancer treatment and palliative care in hospitals, we would like to train personnel who can contribute to anticancer drugs and palliative care at home in accordance with the establishment of a comprehensive community care system. In Toyama Prefecture, in particular, the percentage of three generations living together is high, and along with the development of the system, a system in which hospital pharmacists and family pharmacists work together to provide treatment is being built. In addition, the “Laboratory of Cancer Cell Biology” is in charge of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and its research activities are leading among all pharmacy schools in Japan. |

Cooperation with professional qualifications related to cancer | Accredited as a training facility for professional pharmacists (Japanese Society of Clinical Pharmacology). Several faculty members of the Faculty of Pharmacy are pharmacist advisors of the Japanese Society of Therapeutic Pharmacy and the Japanese Society of Clinical Pharmacology. Several oncology pharmacists have been produced from the participants in the third stage of the program.
Characteristics of educational content | The course will include not only what hospital and pharmacy pharmacists are already doing today, but also advanced content that can only be conducted at universities. Lectures will be conducted via e-learning to make it easier for participants to attend. In addition to lectures on advanced cancer research and treatment aimed at fostering the creation of new cancer drugs, the curriculum will also include in-depth study of practical training, detection of genetic polymorphisms, and therapeutic effects of anti-cancer drugs on them. In addition to training pharmacists who can participate in cancer treatment at home, we plan to conduct our own practical training in the medical field so that they can play a key role in collaboration with other professions in the community. In particular, considering that most cancer patients are elderly, the practical training will be more realistic in Toyama Prefecture, where the population is aging 15 years faster than the Japanese average. The practical training courses at Kanazawa University Hospital can be taken by graduate students of the University of Toyama, and the practical training courses at the University of Toyama can also be taken by graduate students of both universities, allowing students to have inter-university cooperation and experience supporting medical care as a pharmacist in the community.
Guidance system | This course will be supervised by Atsumi Nitta, Professor of Pharmacy and Japanese and Chinese Pharmacotherapy, Faculty of Academic Research. In addition, Professor Masato Taguchi, professor of practical pharmacy, will participate in the planning of practical training related to the pharmacist position in community healthcare. Furthermore, Professor Hiroaki Sakurai of Cancer Cell Biology will be in charge of lectures and exercises related to genomic medicine for cancer treatment.
Career path of graduates | They work as pharmacists at university hospitals throughout Japan and aim to become certified pharmacists in oncology pharmacotherapy by the Japanese Society of Medical Pharmacy. In the future, they will also acquire a certified pharmacist specializing in oncology and a pharmacist specializing in oncology instruction. 100 or so students nationwide are enrolled in four-year pharmacy graduate schools after graduation from sixth-year pharmacy schools, and graduates of national and public universities are especially expected to become future university hospital pharmacy directors. Alternatively, they will work for the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare or other central government agencies in administrative positions, including cancer treatment, and lead pharmacy-related medical care in Japan.
