Characteristics of educational content Shinshu University established the first genetic counseling course in Japan in 2003, accepting one to three students each year, and has so far produced 25 certified genetic counselors throughout Japan (outside of Nagano Prefecture: Miyazaki, Nagasaki, Okayama, Oita, Fukushima, Hyogo, Tokyo, Chiba, and Kanagawa Prefectures). 2018 – In FY2022, HOKUSHIN CANCER PRO developed Japan’s first “Certified Genetic Counselor Course with Expertise in Cancer Treatment”. This course is designed to further develop this, and to foster medical professionals who will play a role in cancer genome medicine and hereditary tumor treatment through active participation in cancer genome outpatient clinics and expert panels.
Guidance system In the Hokushin Cancer Professional “Certified Genetic Counselor Course with Expertise in Cancer Care,” which was offered from FY 2018 to FY 2022, faculty members from the Department of Genetic Medicine/Institute for Genetic Medicine at Shinshu University School of Medicine, the Department of Comprehensive Cancer Therapy and the Department of Pediatric Medicine provided instruction. In this course, guidance on distinctive medical treatment details will also be provided by the Cancer Genome Outpatient Clinic, faculty members of other departments involved in cancer genome medicine within Shinshu University, and faculty members involved in the Hokushin Cancer Professional.
Career path of graduates After obtaining her certification as a certified genetic counselor, she worked at 12 cancer genome medical centers/cooperative hospitals in four prefectures in the Hokushin region, playing an active role as a medical professional who plays a part in cancer genome medicine and hereditary tumor treatment in the Hokushin region.

Acceptance Goals Based on our track record of accepting about two master’s students from all over Japan every year with clinical genetics as their research theme, we set the target number of students to be accepted at 1 person/year. Over the next five years, five certified genetic counselors with expertise in cancer prevention will be trained and placed at university hospitals or children’s hospitals nationwide.
